about

An exciting and innovative ukulele album composed and performed by upcoming ukulele star Matthew Quilliam in his debut release.

"bold, captivating, exciting" - UKE Magazine

Written largely for solo ukulele but with a few little additions along the way. All of the pieces explore ground-breaking ideas for the ukulele, experimenting with the use of pianos, microtones, electronics and even dice!

Despite the experimental nature of the album, great care has been taken to ensure each composition is still highly enjoyable and listenable. You'll be able to hum along with the catchy tunes and maybe even dance to a couple of the pieces too with their upbeat rhythms.

The listing for the album is as follows:

1. Ukulele Sonata No.1 in Am - i) Presto ii) Lento iii) Allegro moderato

2. The Virus Set - i) It's Coming ii) Cold Red Machine iii) Nine Thousand Notes

3. Bonus Track - Megalosaurus Dream

37 minutes in total approx.

1. Ukulele Sonata No. 1 in Am

This three movement sonata is written for solo ukulele with piano accompaniment, written in a neoclassical style. The piece evokes the atmosphere of the classical era in it's structures and textures, whilst employing the use of modern harmonic voicings, rhythms and, of course, instrumentation.

2. The Virus Set

A collection of three individual pieces that convey my personal experience during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The first explores the concept of chance within music, using the roll of a die to control the ukulele playing. There are six sections: 1) Family 2) Adventure 3) Love 4) Holiday 5) Happiness and 6) The Virus. The roll of the dice determines the section that should be played next. The first five sections depict nice things but when the sixth section appears these nice things are totally ruined by the 'virus motif'. When performed live these sections may appear in any random order, twice or not at all. However, for the first ever recording, all six sections have been given in order for demonstrative purposes.

The second is my first experimentation with the use of electronics in depicting a darker story best left untold. The final piece is a minimalist depiction of the monotony of studying at university in lockdown.

3. Megalosaurus Dream

A little bonus waltz named live at an online concert of Matthew's. Viewers were asked to submit random words, two of which were then picked out to generate the piece's title.
